South Sudan, Pieri, Uror County, 07 February 2019 South Sudan’s food security is dire in 2019. Nearly half of South Sudan’s population of 11 million faces severe food shortages between January and March 2019, with 5.2 million people in need. The number of people in need is expected to increase, with more people likely to struggle to meet their food needs as the country approaches the peak of the hunger season between May and August 2019. In line with its strategy to increase the use of surface transport and reduce over-reliance on costly airdrops, WFP has successfully tested road deliveries to Uror and Nyrol by using 10 WFP fleet trucks. Both locations were previously served by airdrops. Following the success of the tests, commercial trucks are preparing to deliver larger food quantities to those locations. তীব্র খাদ্য সংকটে ভুগছে দক্ষিণ সুদানের প্রায় ৭০ লাখ মানুষ। জাতিসংঘের তিনটি সংস্থার সহযোগিতায় দেশটির প্রকাশিত সাম্প্রতিক এক প্রতিবেদনে জানানো হয়েছে এ তথ্য।

এতে বলা হয়, দুর্ভিক্ষের আশঙ্কায় রয়েছে দেশের প্রায় ২০ লাখ নাগরিক।

গত বছর বিবদমান পক্ষগুলোর মধ্যে ঐতিহাসিক শান্তিচুক্তির পরও অর্থনীতির ভঙ্গুর দশা কাটিয়ে উঠতে পারেনি দেশটি।

প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগ ও জাতিগত সহিংসতা এর অন্যতম কারণ বলে মনে করছেন বিশ্লেষকরা।

প্রতিবেদন বলছে, সুদানে প্রতিবছরই বাড়ছে ক্ষুধার্ত মানুষের সংখ্যা, যা চলতি বছরে ৬০ শতাংশ ছাড়িয়েছে।
